Garden Club General Meeting

Social begins at 6:30

General Meeting starts at 7 pm

Location: St. John's Lutheran Church, 7124 S. Cass Ave., Darien, IL

Speaker:  Honey Bees and Pollination presented by Karen and Charles Lorence

With over 40 years of beekeeping behind them, Karen and Charles Lorence are a wonder resource for us and will share a wealth of knowledge regarding Honey Bees and Pollination.
The Lorence family beekeeping experience began in 1971 with two hives in
Wisconsin. In 1974  they moved to Northbrook, IL, and moved the hives to the Fox Valley area. They increased their honey production to keep up with an expanding customer base. At one time they maintained 150 hives but presently have downsized to thirty hives. Charles and Karen were Illinois' first "Beekeeper of the Year" in 2003.

Charles  has been president of the Illinois State Beekeepers, director and president of the Cook-DuPage Beekeepers' Association, president of the Ridge and Valley Beekeepers', has been a State Apiary Inspector for the Illinois Department of Agriculture, and has taught many local seminars and classes in beekeeping and the importance of honey bees.  He is a director for the American Beekeeping Federation. Karen writes for the American Bee Journal and other newspapers and newsletters in the mid-west.

The Lorences sell their honey and other value added products through their business - Lorence's Honey Bee Haven. Some or their own honey and related products products (lip balm, lotion, candles) will be available for purchase at our meeting.
